jawwaad taylor

electronics, trumpet, MC (nyc)

Growing up on Houston's Northside, Jawwaad Taylor had an early exposure to creative music when his uncle played him records by Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton. At a young age, Jawwaad became an accomplished freestyle rapper and later, after meeting musicians involved in the Houston organization Nameless Sound, his interest weighed more heavily on trumpet and free improvisation. After a period, Jawwaad returned to rhyming with the intention to bring his musical activities together and form an original approach.

Within a very short period of time Jawwaad has indeed developed a singular approach to creative music and has collaborated and performed with an incredible range of artists in both Hip Hop and Creative Improvisation including: Joe McPhee, Jay-Z, MF DOOM and Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Haaker Flaten..

Proficient on the trumpet, piano, electronics, and as a wordsmith, Jawwaad is working on a solo hip-hop album. The album will be a follow up to the success of "Craft of the Lost Art" (Lex Records) - 2007's acclaimed release by Shape of Broad Minds, the Philadelphia based underground hip-hop duo that features Jawwaad Taylor.

Jawwaad is currently living in New York City.
