Patrick Danse ( BE / MX )
- film
Patrick Danse is a Belgian film director and editor living in Mexico City. His work ranges from commercial to experimental and spans documentaries, ads, multimedia, animation and fiction film. He has contributed to several projects which have won prizes in International festivals—including Oso Polar, which garnered several awards internationally including best feature film in Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (2017).
Originally a musician, Danse dedicates significant work shooting experimental music artists, bringing images to this scene with short films covering live concerts, street performances and talks on conceptual artistic workflow. Within this realm, Patrick has had the pleasure of working with several artists including: Lasse Marhaug, Samara Lubelski, Thomas Ankersmit, Alan Courtis, and Dolphins Into The Future, among others.
Danse is currently finishing a feature length documentary film, A Place Called Music, on the collaboration between iconic U.S. music composer Philip Glass and the indigenous Mexican Wixaxicas.
Originally shot over the course of 5 days during No Idea Festival 2016, The Finger’d Remove is a compilation of moments shared between musicians Jeph Jerman/Tim Barnes and filmmaker Patrick Danse—instances of improvisation where the musicians, absent of prescribed guidelines, embody a timeless succession of musical ideas forged with elements of realities gathered from their immediate surroundings.
Shot and audio recorded by only Danse, Jeph and Tim foster a singular film and sound trio collaboration through a subconscious understanding of the best angles to appear in frame and an innate understanding of how best to transmit sound to the devices capturing the moment(s).
This new edit of the film foregrounds sound more than the original, allowing the viewer an extended experience of Tim and Jeph’s extraordinary process.
Filmed in Austin, Texas in February 2016. Re-edit, July-September 2022.
